MAHORKC A Model For HO Racing Organizations

Recently I have been in contact with the people of MAHORKC about HO scale racing.  I am still learning more about this scale and one thing I have learned is "the more I learn, the more I have to learn".  MAHORKC, or Mid America HO Racing Kansas City, is an organization which promotes the racing of original Aurora Thunder Jet 500 slot cars.  You will not see magnets holding cars to the track here.  You will see excellent tracks and a variety of classes involving T-Jets.

MAHORKC is currently in their 2018 -2019 season.  This season's schedule has 14 races listed on it with no races being held more than once on any track.  This may seem incredible, but you have to realize they have 20 tracks affiliated within their organization.  Space does not permit me to post a picture of each track, but here are three of the tracks they race on.

 Copperhead Road
 Stupid Hobby Raceway

Their rules, while strictly adhering to the ideals of racing T-Jet cars only, allow for a great deal of individuality through the various classes they have.  Their race schedule dictates that track practice time must start by 3pm and races must start by 5pm.  This is a good rule in that it will allow everyone a base knowledge for how late the races might run.  They seem to have good turnout for their race events and that is not hard to understand with the scope of the membership and track availability.  They even draw racers in from other states to their events.  This draw might have something to do with the hospitality of the host tracks as many of them provide dinner for the racers as well.

MAHORKC seems to understand that special events means more interest.  They recently held a "bag of parts" race.  It is my understanding this is an annual event.  I have to wonder how many annual events they may have.  I believe they have been around for somewhere in the 20 years range.  You can establish a lot of traditions in a 20 year time span!  Back to the "bag of parts" race.  This race was a special race where you were given a bag of parts.  Upon receiving your bag of parts you had 45 minutes to build a car with the contents.  Upon completion of the "build" time racers had a brief practice time, then raced the cars they had built.  What a great idea!  My hat goes off these people.  I just told my wife about this and she asked "Do you want to go to their next Bag of Parts race?  I reminded her that it would about a 12 - 13 hour drive for us.  Her response was...So?  Who knows, you may get a Mississippi boy at your next Bag of Parts race!

You can find out more about MAHORKC at www.mahorkc.com or by going on facebook and simply looking up MAHOR@mahorkc.  I am sure many of you will be finding out more about them just as I will be doing.
