The Search For Slot Car Royalty

There is an old expression called the "Slot Car Syndrome".  This expression is used by other activities which have seen a drop off of newer participants due to actions of the older participants.  This is primarily where the older participants are eager to show off to newer people and basically show them how little they know.  Unfortunately they over do it and give the newer people the idea that they will never be able to be competitive.  With this discouragement the newer people to the hobby leave it to find something else they can do and be successful at.

Slot car racers often want to share with others but do not know how to do it without seeming like show-offs.  How many times have you seen a new racer on the track with his entry level car only to have an experienced racer drop a faster class car on the track and show him how fast he is?  What he is actually doing here is showing the new racer how slow he is.  The new racer often doesn't understand the difference in the classes and the fact the other racer is actually being a jerk.  Slot Car Royalty would want to show a new racer how they can be better instead of how good he actually is.

What we need is a class of Slot Car Royalty.  This class of racer would be a good ambassador for slot car racing.  This type of racer is well based on driving, mechanics, and car set up.  He also would be a friendly sort of person who likes to meet new people and encourage them in the hobby of slot car racing.  I have met a number of this type person over the years.  Unfortunately, I have met a lot more people who do not qualify as Slot Car Royalty.  Slot Car Royalty should not be the kind of racer who shares information with new racers trying to impress them with how good they are.  Royalty would have the confidence to share with out posturing, because they are comfortable with sharing and are comfortable with who they are.  The person who shares trying to impress others is seen as someone who is conceited.

Slot Car Royalty understands that there are others who know more than he does and is willing to give others a chance to show him something as well as sharing with others.  Slot Car Royalty understands the world of slot car racing is larger than they are.

I am searching for people who could be considered Slot Car Royalty.  I am even searching for someone who could be considered the "King of Slot Cars".  If you think you are a candidate for being Slot Car Royalty let me know.  Remember, Slot Car Royalty extends to understanding slot car racing beyond your own local track.  If your slot car knowledge only applies to your local track you may think you are royalty material, but you really have a limited basis for your opinion.  Slot Car Royalty is known by a larger group of people than just one isolated track.  Slot Car Royalty would be a good ambassador to slot car racing with new racers as well as well known champions.  In other words a racer who everyone, new or experienced, can respect and would enjoy being at an event with would be Royalty.

Who is the King of Slot Racers?  Who is Slot Car Royalty?

  1. I think this would be a modest person who knows how good he is but doesn't try to be flashy. This rule would not apply if provoked, however by another wannabe king. At this point I know of no one that would fit the mold you cast in this article. Back in the RC car days there was a person that I would have voted for. He helped me be able to run at TQ speeds during the 1994 paved oval Nationals.

  2. I know what would be a good idea! Create a T-shirt for Slot Car Royalty. Of course only the King of Slot Cars could wear it, or could just anyone put it on? I guess just anyone could wear it as I saw one on someone this past weekend

    1. I am glad you enjoyed the t-shirt. Yes it had in big letters on the back surrounding a picture of a crown "Slot Car Royalty" On the front surrounded by flames was "King Timothy. Who knows, this could be the first of many shirts showing people to be Slot Car Royalty.

  4. If there were nominations for Slot Car Royalty...I would have to nominate my brother Tim, as he has been to slot car tracks all over the country and knows the ins and outs of tracks better than any one I know. He attempts to promote the sport/hobby at all times and is a true ambassador of slot car racing. The "King" does not have to be the fastest or have the best equipment or finish the highest. He has to love slot car racing.
